They can give some hope for a new term of president of a position of independence.

So far no reply.

But why would he even agree to that, I doubt he’d run if it were only open to that path.

While recently in the news, the British Monarch Queen Elizabeth is to visit the Irish nation in May. The first monarch to visit the country since independence in April 1949.

What strikes this as the most interesting as the historic visit, is the fact that neither of these two heads of state have been elected, the president to be fair was elected once.

But the previous party Fianna Fail was the President’s party, and the did everything to keep her in office, like sidelinging an election almost seven years ago just as she had to keep nearby to the party to remain popular.

Well at least she is the president, if unelected with a new party in office that she has never had to make amends with, her opposition.

McAleese’s final months in office should be interesting.

Party polilitical policitians especially when they are from opposing parties, and independents face the same challenge of getting on with the prime minister.

Charles Haughy- 1987-1992, and Mary Robdinson1990-1997, disliked each other, and Haughy made Robinson’s reality at first very restrictive.

According to the authorized biography of Mary Robinson, Charles was a conservative with the intent on being the symbol of Ireland, he disliked presidents, hence his previous times as PM having taken that position to any president. That only be president Hillery.

She was a liberal with the intent on speaking her mind, and promising an ever more active office than the people had ever known before. This was to be a step much further than Erskine Childer’s move to expand the office in 1973.

She looked at ways at how she could do the activies she promised without taking the office down the political road. Some would say she was a social engineer. But many visionaries would be, no?

Just before Patrick Hillery left office, the Aras was almost like a ghost house, at least it seems intepreteted that way. The Aras was falling apart, the staff were being paid out of Hillery’s money allowance, that being about £15,000, i believe that is the figure if I can recall.

It sounds like a mess. Hillery having been tired and looking for escape, he never wanted to be there for a second term. I believe the passing of one of his family members some years before he left office may of made things difficult for him.

Though personally, I think Charles Haughy was correct to be the symbol of the nation, the president by definition, and especially in the Irish case should have no or as little as possible in little else country other than the powers of the office and guardian of the people’s rights.

But then that would be boring wouldn’t it?

Taken in April 1938, a bit late to be saying that now.

The Constitution assigns the President a special role in this sphere. The words about his duty to protect and uphold the Constitution, respect and protect civil rights and liberties and to serve the people faithfully are an important part of the text of the presidential oath, which the President takes before the people at his inauguration.

Even the Russian president failed to uphold the oath, yet in the Russian state democracy doesn’t even exist like in Ireland. Lucky the Irish do have a “nation of laws, and not of men.”

Under Article 31 of the constitution, the people in Russia can protest freely. It is the law of the land.

But the lack of president McAleese’s behaviour just goes to show that one incident can always eventually lead to another. Government is never to be completely trusted.

The answer to the presidency of today, would be to return to the style of Douglas Hyde.

Whilst mentioning the former “internal” president of Eire at the time, June-1938-1945. In all the decades since there hasn’t been another grandfather image since, and probably may never will be another ever again.

McAleese: why she’s set for the seven-year pitch

Dana’s brother, John Brown, campaign manager for her failed presidential candidacy in 1997 and for the Euro elections, says she is waiting for President McAleese to declare her intentions before announcing if she is going to contest the election. The team is undeterred by the scoffing in some quarters at the prospect of Dana’s name on the ballot paper so soon after losing her Euro seat and having failed to beat McAleese seven years ago for the Aras.

“There was an increase in her vote in the Euro elections. It certainly wasn’t a vote collapse,” argues Brown. “As for the presidential election, the issues are totally different this time. We are at a pivotal stage in Irish history where we’re talking about the final nail in Ireland’s coffin as a sovereign state. At the time of the Nice referendum, President McAleese said it was a good model for Europe. Fianna Fail is integrationist. The question that needs to be asked is, if the Irish people ratify the European constitution, will she sign it?”

Conversely, a source in the McAleese circle claims it is foolish of Dana to campaign on the constitution issue because, should she be elected president, she would be prohibited from joining in any referendum debate by the constraints of the office. Before that scenario could materialise, she would be forced to engage in a one-sided debate with an incumbent candidate constitutionally bound to silence. A Prime Time head-to-head, for instance, would be unfeasible

It isn’t about the fact that the president has no power in that area, as the constitution clearly states there is no say. But it is the thought that counts, the philosophy that makes sense.

If you take an oath to maintain a constitution and the fact that there is suspicion and lies concerning the subject of the EU, then what is more important, the country’s constitution or an EU one.

It proves this exact exact example that the office has become a cult of extra baggage, i.e. speeches, and open events all across the country when a president with little power as the constitution gives has no say in anything across the nation that goes on through the government. This use of the office is a waste of money, it should be redirected to the roads or a local hospital or school.
